Thomas Byrne
Senior Fellow

Thomas J. Byrne joined FMC as a Senior Fellow in 2026, and most recently served as President of The Korea Society from August of 2015 until December of 2025. He previously worked at Moody’s Investor Services as Senior Vice President, Regional Manager, Spokesperson, and Director of Analysis for the Sovereign Risk Group in the Asia-Pacific and Middle East regions in Moody’s Singapore office. He also served as a Senior Economist of the Asia Department at the Institute of International Finance in Washington DC. Mr. Byrne holds a Master of Arts degree in international relations with an emphasis on economics from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Before his graduate work, he served as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer in South Korea for three years. Mr. Byrne also teaches as an adjunct professor at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs as well as at Georgetown University’s Graduate School of Foreign Service. He has written opinion articles published in The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg View, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Financial Times, The National Interest, and Reuters Breakingviews.
